  • 1916 – Claude Charles Castleton killed in the Battle of Pozières and for his actions in bringing back wounded men before and at the time of his death, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
  • 1948 – Writer and satirist John Clarke is born in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

  • Australian icon,
    The Stockman's Hall of Fame, was opened in Longreach, Queensland.

  • 2001 – Swimmer Grant Hackett sets a world record in the 1500 m freestyle at Fukuoka, Japan.
  • 2005 – Lachlan Murdoch announces that he will be resigning from executive roles with News Corporation and moving with his family to Australia.
